SOVL Report: Overcoming Beat Block, this works like crazy...
there is no such thing as 'beat block' but there is such thing as lack of inspiration
Good evening program!
Yesterday I sent an email about one shot, I really hope that was useful.
My intent was to expand on that today, and for a bit, I will but I want to go into some techniques I explored today when overcoming 'beat-block'.
Well, there is no such thing as 'beat block' but there is such thing as lack of inspiration. So today I went in search of some, and what I found actually blew me away.
I want to state that I am in NO WAY affiliated with Akai or Marco Polo Beats
There are three things that I do when I lack of inspiration
Get 'work' done (sample conversion, send emails, send tracks out, mix tracks, etc)
Follow along to Youtube tutorials/remake beats
Rest
Now that's out of the way, today I was doing something I HIGHLY advise you to copy.
previously I had bought some expansion kits from Akai (and like before I was essentially only using the drums lol). What I've found is that a few of these expansions have some GREAT-sounding effects chains that you really won’t find anywhere else!
So after copying a few of my favorite fx chains from some really good expansion packs, I started to notice that the sounds in the pack were different yet similar to the demo track.
I started to reference the demo and realized that THE EXPANSIONS ARE USING ONE-SHOTS!!! Well not all of them but a few actually..
and they make the one-shot sound 'cool' by adding effects lol..
and if you layer enough one-shots together you can actually create a really great sonic landscape.. its perfection..
SO what are my recommendations?
Dive into your expansions:
Copy some of your effects racks from your expansion packs. Marco Polo has some great examples of how to doctor up some one-shot samples and create GREAT authentic samples with just single instruments
Go through your projects and solo your sounds… find andy riffs etc that you like and put them into a folder (maybe even categorize them by key)
Make your own one-shots 'cool' by saving effects you find on your expansions and customizing your own one shots. (you can even print the effects down to stack them 👈🏾🤓 )
Layer your sounds to find new inspiration. -or- CHOP existing samples to create one-shots and create new samples using the same sounds
-This will help to keep your sample in the key of the original but find new inspiration.
I hope this email helps!
make sure you start it or bookmark it or whatever.... and remember, all of these techniques essentially work with ANY DAW or sampler.. they all work with digital audio it’s only a matter of HOW they go about the operation!
